Death came to
Capt. Charles Sonsmith at 4:30 am yesterday after a two day illness
from heart failure. He was one of the best known of Saginaw's
citizens, being brought in contact with many of Saginaw's lumbermen
and business men through his connection with the lumber carrying
trade on the Great Lakes and in his local business.
The captain was
born in Germany, January 7, 1837. When fourteen years of age he
commenced his seamanship, apprenticing himself in that country. Nine
years later he came to America and entered on fresh water sailing,
obtaining a mate's certificate. He was later made master of a ship
and sailed in that capacity for years.
He was united in
marriage to Miss Anne Marguerita Moeser
in 1865 at Frankenmuth, who predeceased him three years ago. About 32
years ago he started his present business at his hotel, known as Anchor
House, although he still remained in the vessel business.
Since his marriage he had been a member of St. John's Lutheran
church. He is survived by three children, Mrs. Fred Landskroener,
Mrs. Herman Kremer, and Frank Sonsmith,
three grandchildren, one sister and three brothers.
The funeral will
take place tomorrow at 2 PM from the residence. Rev. Frederick Volz
will officiate with interment in Brady Hill Cemetery. |
