Warren
and Merrilla
It might say
Dr. Stewart on Merrilla's birth certificate, but due to a spring
snowstorm, April 17, 1921, her father Samuel
Ivan LEPPERT was the "doctor" who delivered his
daughter. Dr. Stewart was too late for the main event.
Merrilla
started dating Warren KENT
when they both worked at Holland Furnace in Saginaw. They went to the
same high school, but they didn't really know each other very well
until they worked together. They got marrried at Merrilla's parent's
house on Merrilla's 21st birthday. Their honeymoon was at the Wenonah
Hotel in Bay City, Michigan. They'd always joke about the
"big" trip when we went to Bay City.
Warren
and Merrilla lived with her parents while Warren
was serving in the Army during World War II. Warren
Jr. was born while they were living with Merrilla's parents. Wally
was born in Omaha, Nebraska where Warren
was stationed for a while. Wally
was born prematurely and had club feet and required much of
Merrilla's time. When Warren
had to
go to France, Merrilla moved back with her parents. After the war,
they bought a house from her parents which was right next door to her
parent's home. Merrilla's brother, Sam,
and family lived on the other side of their parents. In this new
home, Warren and Merrilla
had three more children: Rilla,
Kathy and Carol.
Merrilla
was a wonderful cook; nothing fancy, just good home cooking. She got
along well with everyone. She was President of Emerson Elementary
PTA, President of Metropolitan Club, (female relatives of police
officers), a member of a church circle, soloist for Salina Eastern
Star with her mother Ethel
as organist. Merrilla had a nice voice and her children were proud of
her singing.
When Warren
Jr. started college, Merrilla went to work at her church to
help pay for it. She helped cook the church meals and then when the
lady who hired her retired,
she became in charge of the kitchen and all church functions. It got
so she was working full time and when Warren
Jr. graduated, she took a secretarial job at a Fire
Extinquisher company in Bridgeport. She didn't like it and found
another church job at First Baptist, as a secretary. She liked it a
lot, but Warren Sr. was
having trouble mentally so she retired too to be with him. Then her
mother Ethel got sick and
came to live with them. Most of Merrilla's life was spent taking care
of other people. She was a good daughter, a good mother and a good
grandma. She loved her family very much.

While I was woking
on a scrapbook page for Grandma, I wrote down many of the things I
remembered about her. At first it was just going to be an outline but
then I wrote a very short story and I call it "I Remember
Grandma." Click on the book above to read the story. |
