Arthur was
born in Vassar, Michigan in 1888 and married Alice
(GRIERSON) on July 17, 1908 in Saginaw, Michigan. Shortly
after they were married, they moved to Portland, Oregon where they
had all seven of their children. In 1926, they moved to Tujunga,
California. About a year later, on March 13, 1927, Arthur was struck
by an automobile while walking down the street with Alice.
He passed away 3 months later on June 9, 1927 as a result of
injuries sustained in the accident. He was only 39 years old. The
following poem which he wrote in March 1926 was read at his funeral.
O'er
the Unknown Sea to the Unknown Shore
by Arthur Vernet
Kent, March 1926
Some time at
eve, when my spirit is low,
I may slip my
moorings and sail away
Thru purple
shadows that faintly trail
O'er the
ebbing tide of the unknown sea;
Where the
ripple of waters tell a tale
Of a lonely
voyager who sailed away
To mystic
isles, where at anchor lay
The craft of
those who had sailed before
O'er the
unknown sea to the unknown shore.
A few who know
I have sailed away,
Will miss my
craft from the busy day,
Some loving
souls that my heart held dear,
In silent
sorrow may drop a tear;
But I shall
have quietly furled my sail
In moorings
sheltered from strife and gale,
And greeted
those who have sailed before
O'er the
unknown sea to the unknown shore.

This is how
Arthur's son, Warren,
had this picture labeled.
There is some
confusion about this photo, however. I have been told that it is not
really Arthur,
but his
wife, Alice,
dressed
up in his clothes pretending to be Arthur! |

DIES
AS RESULT OF
ACCIDENT
LAST MARCH
No
Blame Is Placed For
Death
of Arthur V. Kent
Arthur V. Kent,
who was struck on the evening of March 13th, by an auto driven by
C.D. Howland of Verdugo City as he and Mrs.
Kent were walking west on Michigan Avenue near Day Street,
died last Thursday at the receiving hospital in Los Angeles after
being treated in several institutions and undergoing several
operations. An autopsy held under the direction of the coroner showed
that Mr. Kent suffered from concussion of the brain, but the jury, at
the inquest held in the coroner's office Monday morning, did not fix
any blame for the injury.
A report made to
the police by Mrs. Kent
at the time of the accident said that Howland stopped and offered
aid. It appears also that he endeavored to find an ambulance to take
Mr. Kent to a hospital but others removed him before he succeeded.
The funeral was in
charge of the White Funeral Parlors of Tujunga and was held at the
Little Church of the Flowers at Forest Lawn Tuesday afternoon. Mr.
Kent was aged 39 years. He came here from Portland, Oregon something
over a year ago and was employed as a chauffeur. He leaves a wife,
mother, seven children in Tujunga, a brother in Garvanza and other
relatives besides a great many friends whom he acquired during his
short residence here.
The Rev. James
Abbott, of the Sunland Baptist Church, officiated at the simple,
beautiful service in the Little Church of the Flowers, and was
assisted by members of the congregation who sang. The following poem
which was written by Mr. Kent in March 1926 was read by Mr. Abbott.
(See poem at the top of this page.) |
