Ralph England Killed In Car-Truck Collision
Front page of the Southwest Times Record (Fort Smith paper) on June 3, 1951

Son and Niece in Critical Condition; Charge Filed Against Second Driver

Ralph England, 40-years old, Fort Smith truck line operator, for many years, was killed Saturday in a head-on automobile-truck collision six miles west of Sallisaw, Okla. He was president of England Brothers Truck Line and immediate past president of Fort Smith Shrine Club.

England's son, John Lee, 12, and his neice, Mrs. Alma Satterfield, 35, were in serious condition at St. Edwards Hospital. Neither had regained consciousness late Saturday afternoon.

Driver of the truck, identified by Oklahoma Highway Patrolman Jack Larmour as Sergeant Jack T. Breedlove, of Fort Gibson, Okla., stationed at Camp Chaffee, was in the base hospital. Extent of his injuries was not known.

Manslaughter charges were filed against Breedlove before Justice of the Peace William Russell at Sallisaw Saturday afternoon, Larmour said.

Returning From Tulsa

Larmour reported Breedlove was driving on the wrong side of the highway, "completely across the center line," when the vehicles collided.

Friends said England had driven to Tulsa to pick up Mrs. Satterfield, who had flown there from Los Angeles. Her father, England's brother, Marshal England, was said to be ill at his home in Caulksville, Ark. England was to drive her to Caulksville.

A friend of Mrs. Satterfield, who had flown from Los Angeles with her, had accepted an invitation to come to Fort Smith in the England car. Sequoyah County Hospital attaches identified the woman as Elma Moon, Dallas, Texas. She was given first aid treatment and released.

Accident on Curve

Trooper Larmour said witnesses told him the England car was traveling at about 60 miles an hour, and Breedlove was doing about 35 miles an hour when the vehicles collided. He said the accident occurred on a slight curve on U.S. Highway 64.

England was born and reared on a farm near Ratcliff, Ark. He came to Fort Smith as a young man in the early thirties. Starting out with one truck, he built his business up to a fleet of about 100 trucks, operating throughout the Southwest.

Besides the Shrine Club, he was a member of the Amrita Grotto, a thirty-second degree Mason and a member of the First Methodist church.

Arrangements Incomplete

He is survived by his wife, his son, John Lee, and two daughters, Ann and Elaine, all of the home at 510 South Fourteenth Street.

Other survivors include his mother, Mrs. Cannie England, Fort Smith; four brothers, Marshal, Caulksville, Sherman, Ratcliff, Mays and Raymond, both of Fort Smith; four sisters, Mrs. Esthel Vest, and Mrs. Olen Allred, both of Fort Smith, Mrs. John Vest, Branch, Ark., and Mrs. Carl Caulk, Ozark, Ark.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete late Saturday at Edwards Funeral Home.

Wreck Death Brings Suit

Suits for amounts totaling $43,500 were filed in federal court Wednesday by the Merchants National Bank, executor of the Ralph England estate.

England died from injuries received June 2, 1951, when his auto and a truck driven by Jack P. Breedlove collided about six miles south of Sallisaw, Okla. England's son, John Lee, and his neice, Mrs. Alma Satterfield, were injured in the crash.

Breedlove is named defendant in the suits.
