You are here: Photo Albums ENGLAND John Henderson According to D.W. VEST, John's grandson, "As a blind old man, one night, he had to use the bathroom. In doing so, he tripped over a rocking chair, falling, and striking his head, causing the stroke he died from." Other stories told by D.W. VEST: Pa and Ma John lived near Ratcliff, Arkansas. D.W. said he would go to their house and stay with them some in the summers. He remembered Pa John going out in the early mornings with his rifle to hunt squirrels in the pine woods near the house. He would bring back enough for breakfast for everyone. Ma John ruled the house. She would be up early, cook breakfast, and call for everyone "one time" only to eat. D.W. said Ralph wouldn't come and would still be in bed. Ma John would go to the bedroom with a paddle and get him out of bed. This happened several times according to D.W. After breakfast, the kitchen was cleaned and no snacks until the noon meal. That rule was strictly enforced. When D.W. was asked asked why the ENGLAND men were good businessmen, he said that Pa John was a good horse trader and drove a hard bargain. The boys must have learned from him as they were very successful men. Mays and Sherman started ENGLAND Brothers Truck Line later owned by Ralph. Mays then started a new car dealership and Sherman owned several Gas Service Stations. Marshal was a farmer and Raymond worked for both Ralph and Mays. Photo Gallery
