Albums EASTMAN William Amherst William Amherst EASTMAN was born in Nepean, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of Nadab EASTMAN (a Canadian) and Sarah GORDON (an Irish immigrant). He married Mary HAGLE in 1848 in Brock District, Ontario. Amherst and Mary had 9 children together before she passed away in 1869 when their youngest child was just 8 months old. There was some heartache during their marriage as both of their sons named John died as young children. The first John lived from 1851 to 1856 and the second from 1864 to 1866. Apparently Amherst moved his family from Ontario to Michigan in the mid-1850's. The 1860 U.S. Federal Census shows the family in Jamestown, Ottawa County, Michigan. This census also gives us the fact that all of their children born in 1855 and before were born in Canada and those after 1857 were born in Michigan.
Mary died in October 1869 and Amherst married his second wife, Constance BENNETT, exactly three months later! They immediately started a family, having their first of 5 children just 10 months after the wedding. Again, Amherst was widowed. Constance died sometime between giving birth to their last child, Catherine, in March 1879 and June 1880 (the enumeration date of the U.S. Federal Census of 1880). This census lists Amherst as a widower with 6 sons, 3 daughters, a daughter-in-law and a granddaughter in his household. However, I do not believe that the first 3 sons listed are his. They may have been Constance's from a previous marriage. Amherst died October 19, 1905 in Elk Township, Sanilac County, Michigan where he is buried. |
