Lloyd was the
first of three sons born to George
Edward Wilburn EASTMAN
and Edna
Selma Pauline (SONSMITH) EASTMAN.
He was born on a farm in Spaulding Township near Saginaw, Michigan.
At an early age his parents moved to another farm near Reese,
Michigan and to a third rented farm close to Indiantown, Michigan.
When Lloyd was 7 or 8 years old the family left the farm and moved to
Charles Street in Saginaw, Michigan right next door to the Steelman
family. This is where he met his life-long friend, Joe STEELMAN. His
family moved once again to Bond Street in Saginaw during Lloyd's high
school years. During these years there were four families that were
close and whose children grew up together. These four families were
the EASTMAN's, the STEELMAN's, the
ARMSTRONG's and the ARCHANGELI's.
Lloyd's
schooling started in Indiantown, then continued in Saginaw at
Feurbringer and Stone Elementary Schools, North Intermediate School,
and ended with his graduation from Arthur Hill High Trade School in 1938.
After
graduation Lloyd worked for a couple of years at Lloyd Dye's Standard
gas station on State and Bond Street in Saginaw, but quit to become a
time clerk at the Baker-Perkins company. Since he was a hands-on type
of person, he felt the time clerk job was merely "pushing a
pencil" and quit after a short time. He started working at the
General Motors "Gun Plant" in Saginaw as a machine operator
in April of 1941. He stayed there until late 1945, when the war ended
as did the need for guns. During this period of time, Lloyd applied
for and was granted the opportunity to learn the grinding of cutters,
but he had to go on the third shift to do it. After the gun plant
shut down Lloyd went back to Dye's gas station, where he was known as
"Curly!" He stayed there until June of 1950 when his father-in-law,
Fred
ARCHANGELI,
helped him get into the pattern shop of the Chevrolet Grey Iron
Foundry as a tool grinder. He stayed with this job until his
retirement from General Motors in January of 1977 at age 56.
On
Memorial Day weekend, 1942, Lloyd married Lois
Irene ARCHANGELI,
a girl that he had grown up with. The couple moved into an apartment
on 7th and Carrol in Saginaw. Their second apartment was on Oakly in
Saginaw, where they stayed until they moved into Bob
and Kate ARCHANGELI's house while Bob
was away in World War II. Their first child, Wayne,
was born while the couple lived at this house. When Bob
returned from the war, Lois
and Lloyd moved to the upstairs of his parent's house on Bond street
and then bought a lot at 4095 Shattuck Road in Saginaw. They
alternated living at the EASTMAN and ARCHANGELI parents' houses while
they built their house on Shattuck; the reason for the switching
around was that the upstairs of the EASTMAN house was very hot in the
summer and Lois
was very uncomfortable living there during her pregnancies with
Cheryl and JoAnne.
Building
materials were scarce after the war and no one delivered anything.
If you found some supplies, you had to buy them right then and it was
up to you to get them to the building site. Lloyd had only his 1937
Chevy and a trailer to transport wood, brick, concrete blocks,
shingles and everything else needed to build the house. Construction
moved along slowly as no electric power lines had been strung during
part of the construction. Many cuts were made with his hand saw.
The house was
under roof, with heating and plumbing by late 1948 when Lois
and Lloyd decided to move in. The upstairs was not complete and the
three children slept in what is now the dining room. The house was
finally completed in the early 1950's, a two car garage was added in
the mid 1950's, and a family room in the early 1980's.
In
1954 Lloyd's friend, Lloyd DYE, told him about a cottage that he had
purchased on an island near Cedarville, Michigan. DYE told Lloyd that
there were several other cottages vacant on the island. In April of
1955, Lloyd, Lois, and
friends Joe and Frieda STEELMAN went up to investigate. The end
result was that the two families bought cottages right next door to
each other. In the 1960's, Lloyd and Lois
bought another cabin on the Rifle River near West Branch, Michigan.
Lloyd added on a couple of rooms to this cabin and put in a
fireplace. Many weekends were spent at "The Cabin" during Lois's
teaching career. This retreat was sold in the late 1970's. "The
Cottage" in Cedarville was old, crooked and needed repair. Lloyd
disliked it so much that upon retirement, he tore it down completely
and rebuilt it from the ground up using many of the existing
materials. The cottage is now straight, leak-free, and has many
modern features missing from the original building.
In
November of 1957, Lloyd started into the Mason's fraternal
organization. He finished his 3rd degree in January of 1958, his 32nd
degree in the late 1970's and was the Worshipful Master of Salina
Lodge #155 during 1984.
Lloyd has had
many hobbies during his life. During his earlier years he was an
avid, proficient hunter. In the 1960's Lloyd joined the Saginaw
Township volunteer fire department. Lloyd bowled during his entire
life and took up golf while in his 40's. In his 50's he and Lois
became interested in rocks and gems. He joined an Alzheimer's support
group during his wife's last years.
In
his 60's Lloyd developed his patience and care-giving abilities by
watching over first his mother and then his wife who both died at his
home on Shattuck Road in 1988 and 1993 respectively. During this time
he also kept close tabs on his mother-in-law Margaret
ARCHANGELI.
Lloyd and Lois
observed their 50th wedding anniversary on May 29, 1992 but the
occasion was not festive due to Lois's
advanced stage of Alzheimer's.
After Lois's
death, Lloyd lived alone in the home that he built in the late
1940's. In 1997, this house was "traded-in" on a new home
located less than a mile from the old one.
Prostate
Cancer and Parkinson's disease struck Lloyd during his 70's. He was
able to defeat the cancer but the Parkinson's just kept progressing.
The disease was greatly advanced by a fall where his head hit on the
bathroom wall in April of his final year. This fall lead to an
acceleration of his sickness. His three children cared for him at his
home through late July until more help was needed. Lloyd then moved
to the Alterra Healthcare facility in Saginaw, Michigan where he
became a favorite among caregivers working there. Hospice nurses
began comforting Lloyd in October and were with him when he passed
away on Sunday, November 10, 2002 3:23 pm.
During his
final weeks there was one Saturday when he was able to communicate
quite well. Many family members visited him that day. Lloyd said,
"I just want to be with my wife."
Did Lloyd have
a good life? He might say, "Beats the hang out of me." If
asked again he would probably say, "You bet."
