You are here: Photo Albums ARCANGELI / ARCHANGELI Pietro Peter was born in Italy on June 2, 1866 in the Village of Montagnana, Province of Florence, Italy. He lived and worked on his father's vineyard until he left for the United States. It is not clear why Peter left Italy especially since his father had a successful business. Peter and his brother, Dan, left Italy on July 15, 1892, bound for America. The 1900 Collier Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania census states that Peter did in fact immigrate in the year 1892. Peter left behind his wife, Anna, and his one month old son, Fred. He would not see Fred again for six years. He settled in the mining district of Washington, Pennsylvania. In approximately 1895, he sent word to Italy that he wanted his wife to join him, and she did. Dominic, another of Peter's brothers, left Italy on May 5, 1896 to join his brothers in Pennsylvania. Peter applied for, and was granted, U.S. citizenship in Washington County, Pennsylvania on August 31, 1896.
The discussion over the spelling of the Peter's last name is confusing. Apparently it was spelled without the "h" in Italy. Since Fred (Peter's oldest son) was instructed to spell his name with the "h" by his teacher, apparently Peter and Anna took on this spelling as well. Both of their headstones have the "h" in the name Archangeli.
Peter had siblings named Dominic, Dashimo (Dan), Leo and Lino who all came to the U.S. He also had two other sisters that stayed in Italy. Leo was the baby of the family and Dashimo was the black sheep of the family as his house was carved out of the side of a hill. Occasionally livestock would crash through the skylight! When he was too old to go into the mines, Peter bought a farm in Carrolton, Michigan. He is buried in Saginaw's Forest Lawn cemetery, next to his wife, Anna, and just a few feet from his son Fred.
