Lois Irene
Lois was the
third of four children born to Fred
and Margaret
(ARCHAMBOULT) ARCHANGELI.
Her birth place was Carrolton, Michigan. When she was 9 months old,
the family moved to a brand new house at 2525 Barnard Street in
Saginaw, Michigan. Lois lost her older sister Helen
to leukemia when Lois was only 10 years old, but never forgot her and
continued to mention her throughout her life.
Lois began
dating Lloyd EASTMAN when
she was just a teenager. Lloyd
was a friend of her older brother Bob.
Bob didn't have a car and when he
began dating a girl named Kate Parker, he suggested that Lloyd
go out with his younger sister Lois, and then he and Kate could ride
along in the back seat. This plan worked out quite well as both
couples later married, and the two families remained close for years.
Lois
and Lloyd were married on
May 29, 1942. Lois was 19 at the time and worked in an office of Bell
Telephone. She left this position in 1945 when her first child, Wayne,
was born. The couple had two more children, Cheryl and JoAnne. While
raising her three children, Lois was active as both a Cub Scout den
mother and a Brownie leader.
One evening in
the early fifties, Lois decided to cook a new kind of food for her
three small children ... pizza pie. Lois was a wonderful cook but was
not familiar with how to prepare this early "box kit" and
no one liked this new type of food. So they tried to feed it to their
Cocker Spaniel "Taffy" and even he would not eat it. It was
then decided that pizza pie was not fit for even dogs. It was a long
time before they learned to like pizza.
Lois
did lots of cooking and was an early champion of "ethnic"
foods. She cooked lots of spaghetti, ravioli, chop suey, and Spanish
rice. Many other meals were prepared from the fruits of Lloyd's
hunting and fishing trips. Oftentimes a piece of "shot" was
located while eating rabbit or pheasant. Perch were always filleted
and pike were always filleted and skinned, to get the "wild"
out of them.
Lois stayed
home during the years when her children were young and taught them
her organizational skills. She was good with her sewing machine and
even stitched up a cover for their Lyman boat out of heavy canvas.
She also made three duffel bags for the kids, each one with their
name on it. When it came time for a trip to the cottage, Lois would
present the children with a list of what they were to pack for the
trip, and it was their responsibility to pack the proper items in
their duffel bag. She said, "If you don't have enough clean
underwear for the trip, it's not my fault."
Lois
was a member of a "Club" that met monthly (see photo at
left). This was merely a group of friends that would gather at each
other's homes to play cards and socialize. These eight women got
together for years until the death of Kate Archangeli, the
sister-in-law of Lois. After the break up of this group, she joined a
"Scrabble Club" with another sister-in-law, Kay ARCHANGELI,
and a lady named Betty BESAW. Betty and her husband Mickey would
become close friends of Lois and Lloyd
and took many fall vacations with this couple to the cottage.
When her
children were teenagers, she went back to work as a cook at Plainview
school in Saginaw Township. At age 40 she left the school kitchen and
entered college with her daughter Cheryl. She graduated four years
later from Michigan State University with a teaching degree. She then
taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades at Mackinaw Middle School in Saginaw,
Michigan for about 15 years, and earned a Master's Degree along the way.
Severe
headaches plagued her at times during her life and when they were
too powerful, she had to lie down on the couch until they subsided.
These headaches often came forth at times when the family was getting
ready for another trip to their cottage. Lois had a special affection
for the cottage and even kept a journal of activities and events that
occurred there. When the cottage was to be torn down and rebuilt,
Lois made a scale model of the new cottage. During the construction
of this model, Lois asked Lloyd
where the stairs were going to be located. Lloyd
simply said "What upstairs?" Sometimes, while at the
cottage, Lois and Lloyd
would get up early and go out fishing before the children were awake.
The instructions were to put up the flag when they awoke. When Lois
and Lloyd saw this from
their boat out in the bay, they would come back in and have a family breakfast.
She had much
patience and loved to work with her grandchildren, teaching them
crafts such as macrame and beading.
Lois joined
the Eastern Star in her later years, but the enjoyment with this
group was cut short as she had her first stroke late in 1982. She
seemed to make a full recovery, but more strokes led to Alzheimer's
Disease and a steady decline. In August of 1989 a severe stroke
immobilized her until her death on April 22, 1993 at age 70.

record player above to hear a sound recording of Lois. Wait for the
entire file to load (it takes about a minute) and then click on the
play button. If you can't hear it very well, turn up the volume and
then click play again. Lois says: "This is Grandma Eastman."
The recording was made in December, 1971. Lois decided that since
her son Wayne
and his family had moved to Texas, it would be nice if they could
send tape recordings back and forth. This clip is from one of the
tapes that passed back and forth. Lois would often read children's
stories on tape and send them to her grandchildren, Robyn
and Paul. |
