England Eastman Kent Archangeli genealogy family history

Fred Edward ARCHANGELI
June 10, 1892 - June 1, 1957

Fred was born near Florence, Italy. His grandfather, Martin Arcangeli, owned a vineyard where Fred's father worked. For some unknown reason, his father, Pietro, decided to come to America while Fred was less than one year old. When Fred was about three years old, Pietro sent a message that he wanted his wife, Anna, to come over. She did so but left Fred behind with relatives. When Fred was 6 years old, someone else was coming over from Italy and brought Fred with them to be reunited with his parents.

He first lived in Pennsylvania, then Ohio, and finally moved to Saginaw, Michigan in 1909. His father worked in mines in all three of these states, and Fred followed his lead by beginning his working career in the mines at the early age of 12!

Fred always went by the name of Fred and nothing else, but his mother always called him Federico. Apparently this had been his name in Italy. The spelling of Fred's last name was changed by Fred's teacher when she inserted the "h" and no one told her not to, after all she was the teacher. Fred's brothers Dante, Martin, Bruno and Geno were all born in the U.S. and took the name Archangeli on their birth certificates. All of the rest of the family who were over here and mostly all living in South Saginaw, used the original name of Arcangeli.

Fred and MargaretFred worked as a bartender and ran a movie theater. Both of these businesses were housed in the same building and were owned by by his uncle Dan Arcangeli. A few years later when Dan opened his hardware store in South Saginaw, Fred worked there. He left his uncle's businesses and went to work at Lufkin Rule Company where he met Margaret ARCHAMBOULT. Fred also worked at Erd Motor Company and at Stork Engineering Company where he learned the skills which later enabled him to become a metal pattern maker. Another job was with General Gas Stove Company around 1924-5. This company moved to Detroit and Fred decided to follow. He and his family rented out their newly purchased home and moved to Detroit. This company went bankrupt after only four months and the Archangeli family moved back to Saginaw, forcing the renter to move elsewhere. Upon returning, Fred went back to digging coal in a Saginaw area mine, probably the one near St. Charles. In 1928 the Chevrolet Motor Company decided upon Saginaw as the site to locate the new foundry. The product was to be an overhead valve 6 cylinder engine. His past experience got him hired as a journeyman patternmaker. He apparently did not serve a traditional apprenticeship, but proved to be a far superior craftsman than many of his co-workers who had actually served as apprentices.

Fred did not have a long-term formal education. His wife says that he only finished the fourth grade, while his son Don remembers him saying that he went through the 8th grade. He did speak American English very well without even a hint of an accent. He wrote well and knew American history as demonstrated to son Don during his school years.

Fred was very much a patriotic American. He would not purchase items made in foreign countries. He always drove a Chevrolet because, as he said, "That's my bread and butter." Fred was very politically conscientious and exercised his vote in all elections since 1913. He was a strong Democrat. Apparently no one ever asked him if he was a citizen of the U.S. Fred finally became an American citizen on August 5, 1943.

Fred was an outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. In his younger years, he had a boat that he and Margaret ran down on the Saginaw river. In his 50's he bought a 15' Lyman. Many days were spent on the Saginaw Bay fishing for perch.

Fred had a real manly way about him. He would test the sharpness of a knife by scraping the hair off the underside of his arm. Fred always seemed to be in fine health. He passed away just 9 days short of his 65th birthday and possible retirement. It is felt that he probably would not have retired at that point. He wanted to buy a new car, probably a '57 or '58 Chevrolet, pay it off and then retire. Also, many of his co-workers were his close friends and he enjoyed the time spent with them.

A blood clot made it's way to Fred's heart and he passed away on June 1, 1957, even though there was a doctor right there at the house. Margaret and Don were with him at the end.

~Written by Fred's grandson, Wayne EASTMAN, with help from Fred's youngest son Donald.
