Memories by Robyn (EASTMAN) ENGLAND, Margaret's great-granddaughter

Margaret and Robyn EASTMAN in about 1990#1 - One day we were at Grandma's house and Dad had a video camera. There were a bunch of grandkids sitting by Grandma on her couch. Dad started to videotape us and she suddenly got very still because she thought she was having her picture taken (or should I say, having her "lookin's tooken"...read on to see what I'm talking about!). Even after he explained to her that it was a video camera and she could move, she still got very still every time he would point the camera at her.

#2 - I received a letter from Grandma shortly after her 100th birthday party. At the party she had met her great-great grandson Zach Eastman. In the letter she wrote that it sure was nice to meet little Jack! As we all know, her hearing wasn't very good in her later years so she probably thought his name was Jack instead of Zach!

#3 - The last time I saw Grandma was in June of 1995. I had driven up to Michigan from Texas and I went over to Uncle Don's house and stayed with Grandma for a couple of hours. She told me, "I am 102 years old (with the emphasis on the 2). And that is too old (again with the emphasis on the too)!" This gives me comfort because I know she was ready to go and 5 months later she passed away. This was also the day she moved from Uncle Don's to Uncle Bob's house. As they were driving away, she said "I love you, Robyn!" and blew me a kiss. That is the last thing I ever heard her say and the last time I saw her.

Memories by Wayne EASTMAN, Margaret's grandson

#1 - Our family went fishing many times with Grandma and Grandpa Archangeli out on the Saginaw Bay. We usually caught a whole bunch of perch. When we got back to Saginaw, it was time to clean the fish. This took place down in the basement. Usually Grandpa and Dad did the scaling and flipped them over to me for head removing and gutting. Mom and Grandma did the filleting. After several years of this, I asked about learning to fillet the perch. Grandma was very skillful with a knife and her fillets always looked perfect. She taught me how to use the knife and I possess those skills today. Boy those fish always tasted sooo good. I wish that I could go back there for just one more fish fry!

#2 - Two days ago we had some leftover turkey from the Easter Sunday meal. I mixed it in with some turkey noodle soup and that was going to be our Monday night dinner. When it was hot, I called out "SOUP'S ON" with the emphasis on SOUP just like I have heard Grandma do so many times. It was another of her "things", kind of like when she whispered "toilet paper."

Memories by Karen (ARCHANGELI) BUDZINSKI, Margaret's granddaughter

Margaret and Karen ARCHANGELI in about 1944#1 - Whenever anyone would get Grandma and take her for a ride, whether it was just for an outing or whatever, when you brought her home, she'd always get out of the car and say... "Thanks for the buggy-ride!" And Grandma's "toilet paper" whisper voice was used whenever she spoke of something she deemed private or personal. My sister and I named it her "Funeral Voice"!

#2 - Another of my fondest memories is of sitting at the foot of Grandma's chair, as a young child, and having her stroke my hair. To this day, this is the most restful and affectionate thing anyone can do for me and something I love to do for my grandchildren!

#3 - We also enjoyed eating popcorn at Grandma's house which we could eat carefully in the living room on sheets of newspaper to protect the carpeting! Popcorn which she grew in her garden, and we were allowed to open the back window at the head of the stairs and roll the cobs around in our hands to shuck them of the hard kernels to be popped. The window had to be open so you could blow off the papery parts of the cob!

Memories by Cherie (EASTMAN) DIENER, Margaret's granddaughter

Margaret in 1995 at age 102#1 - I thought you might get a kick out of one of Grandma's old sayings. Whenever she'd see someone getting their picture taken, she'd say, "I guess they're getting their "lookin's tooken", then she'd laugh and repeat it about two more times.

#2 - One other thing I remember Grandma doing was a morning ritual. Whether she was with us at the cottage or we kids were staying with her for some reason, the first thing in the morning, she'd pour a little glass of orange juice for each of us and tell us it was "just for health's sake." She did that so often that we began calling orange juice "health's sake." I guess she was right, though, since she lived to be almost 103.

Click on the record player above to hear a sound recording of Margaret. Wait for the entire file to load (it takes about a minute) and then click on the play button. If you can't hear it very well, turn up the volume and then click play again. Margaret says: "Well, we miss all of you here. We're all here (in the) in Lois's living room and we miss you very much." I received this recording from my Dad, Wayne EASTMAN. It was made in Margaret's daughter, Lois (ARCHANGELI) EASTMAN's home in Saginaw, Michigan in December, 1971.
